What a wonderful way to spend a winter: offering an art class to a friend. A weekly art class in January, February and March gave us the chance to hang out together during the winter months and to learn new art skills.
The class was called “Learn to Paint Boats in an Ocean Scene’, and we produced many wonderful examples of boat art! Painting and drawing boats can be tricky, so we spent a few weeks learning perspective drawing of boats. Drawing compound curves, such as the curves of a boat’s hull, can be difficult. Using two-point perspective and grid boxes allowed us to design how we wanted to see the boat and from which angle with great control and proper perspective.
We both learned a lot during our 8-week long class. I learned how much work teachers do to prepare for each lesson! And my friend learned perspective drawing, brush skills, acrylic painting techniques and colour theory. The big takeaway was that assigning homework, and actually completing the homework worked wonders in advancing our progress and putting the lessons learned into practice. The second big takeaway was that as the teacher, it is a must to have samples paintings/drawings ready for each lesson to demonstrate what we hope to accomplish.
Once again, thank you to all the teachers out there who work so tirelessly on their lesson preparations, providing us with samples, examples and exercises.
I am sad that summer is nearing its end as I write this, but winter art classes give me so much to look forward to!
